World History (G5-7)

Great Documents through History

This semester-long liberal arts course is designed to provide students with an in-depth look at the documents that truly impacted world history. Students will learn about documents as diverse as Hammurabi’s Code, The Magna Carta, The Declaration of Independence and The Communist Manifesto. Each class will focus on one of these influential documents, and include a lecture on context, study of associated vocabulary, time for close reading and structured group discussion. Through careful document analysis, students will come away with a better understanding of the integrated nature of world history and refined English-language skills. Available for students in G4-5 and G6-7.

Ancient History - 3500 BC to AD 476

Course Description: This course examines the cultures, lifestyles, politics, religions, architecture, and literature of ancient civilizations: Sumerians, Mesopotamians, Assyrians, Egyptians, Israelites, India, China, the Americas, Phoenicians, Greeks, and Romans. Students will discuss the various topics, analyze primary sources, and recall facts. This class gives students the chance to identify important historical figures and events, and to recognize the many advancements in science and technology of the early modern civilizations. Students will gain knowledge and apply it to critical thinking. Students will be given reading/writing/research assignments after each lesson. Feedback will be provided before or during the next lesson.

Middle Ages - AD 476 to AD 1492

This course examines the cultures, lifestyles, politics, religions, architecture, and literature of civilizations of the Middle Ages: the Franks, the English, the Russians, the Reformation, the Printing Press, Imperial China, India, the Americas, and the Age of Exploration. Students will discuss the various topics, analyze primary sources, and recall facts. Students will be able to know facts and vocabulary pertaining to each society and recognize the many contributions of each culture to the modern
world. This class also gives students the chance to identify important historical figures and events. Students will gain knowledge and apply it to critical thinking. Students will be given reading/writing/research assignments after each lesson. Feedback will be provided before or during the next lesson.

Modern History I: 1492 to 1850

This course examines the cultures, lifestyles, politics, religions, architecture, and literature of civilizations of the Early Modern World: the Ottoman Empire, the Roman Empire, the Russian Expire, France, Great Britain, Spain, China, and India. Students will discuss the various topics, analyze primary sources, and recall facts, such as the Slave Trade, Industrial Revolution, and the French Revolution. This class gives students the chance to identify important historical figures and events. Students will gain knowledge and apply it to critical thinking. Students will be given reading/writing/research assignments after each lesson. Feedback will be provided before or during the next lesson.

National Geography Reading Explorer

Reading Explorer series prepares learners for academic success with highly visual, motivating National Geographic content that features real people, places, and stories.
